Academic

During their academic studies the children are provided with a broadly based and balanced curriculum centred on the National Curriculum. Priority is given to the core subjects of mathematics, English and science. The foundation subjects including history, geography, design technology, ICT, art, music, physical and religious education are also studied. The modern foreign languages studied are French and Spanish.

The teaching staff have high expectations of every child and lessons are carefully planned to ensure that the children have the opportunity to succeed and to achieve their individual potential.

A variety of teaching methods are used. Children will often be taught as a whole class but sometimes they will work in smaller groups and on other occasions they will be expected to work independently.

In Middle and Senior School there is a gradual transition from class based learning to the more specific subject specialisation necessary to prepare pupils for scholarships and entrance to senior independent and maintained schools.

In the core subjects of maths and English, children are generally set, according to ability.

All children are regularly assessed so that their academic and personal achievements and needs can be identified.

Parents are very much involved in the life of the School and are encouaged to take part in and support as many school activities as possible.

There are regular evenings set aside for parents to discuss their chidren’s progress with members of staff, and there are plenty of occasions for discussing academic and social development informally when visiting the School.

At the start of each year the staff present to parents an outline of the curriculum for the forthcoming year.
