The aim of geography teaching at Stroud is to help the pupils discover more about their world and the interaction between humans and their environment. Throughout their studies there is a strong emphasis on enquiry skills and investigating issues that are relevant and current. Plans are linked to the National Curriculum and there is a clear progression of skills as the children move through the Key Stages.
The outside environment is used extensively both within the extensive school grounds and on field trips to different parts of the UK.
In the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 geography is studied in a very cross curricular way developing the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world.
In Middle School topic areas are more specific, including study of local issues and developing an awareness of other places in the world.
Children in Senior School will be expected to research independently and communicate their findings on subjects as varied as sustainable tourism on Dartmoor, and the impact of natural disasters in poorer countries of the world.
Assessment in both a formal and informal manner enables plans to be developed and lessons to be delivered effectively.
