Mathematics

Mathematics is seen as providing an essential set of life skills as well as being a subject in it’s own right, with many cross-curricular links. Pupils will develop skills necessary for problem solving and strategies to enhance manipulation of numbers.

Children will develop knowledge, skills and understanding and the ability to tackle and solve mathematical problems. We firmly believe children should develop a real interest, enjoyment, motivation and confidence in mathematics and we try wherever possible, to teach new mathematical concepts in a practical context.

During lessons, we present mathematics as a creative and fascinating process in which children are encouraged to use their imagination and initiative. Children are also rigorously prepared for examinations, whether they are end of term assessments or Common Entrance exams at 11 and 13.

Children are encouraged to work in a number of ways both independently and in group work, and they are taught ways of communicating using mathematical language and conventions.

At Stroud, we have created an environment in which pupils can confidently experiment with their ideas and express their difficulties. All children are given the opportunity to reach their full potential and appropriate differentiation is planned for individual needs, whether children need extra consolidation or extension in each area of mathematics.
